Danny O

Daniel O’Connor’s vibrant art is built upon inventive imagination. An instinctive recycler, he creates collage art using a range of media, from comic books and colorful magazine paper to subtle and sophisticated Scotch tape drawings. Vintage record album covers serve as his modern canvas, adding further depth and meaning to each collage. His studio reflects his eclectic art style and media: “Clean before a project ... paper-ridden floor afterward. Stacks of albums and magazines, a wall of sunny windows, and a beautiful black cat.”

is inspiration comes from Pop culture, which is reflected in many of his collages, including the New York City skyline, the Statue of Liberty and objects from everyday life. The artists who influence him include the Beatles, The Jam, Paul Klee, Matisse, Warhol and Milton Avery.

As an artist, Danny O works in many media. Most notable is his 3-D ball art. He has collected an astounding 17,000 lost or discarded balls, which he has made into intricate mosaics for commercial and museum installations. In the fall of 2004, Danny O will make a permanent installation of his entire ball collection on the fire escape and roof of the new Midway building in Fort Point, an artist community on the southeast side of Boston.

Danny O is a native of Lexington, Massachusetts. After high school he served in the U.S. Navy, first as a photographer’s mate and later as a staff artist. He then pursued his artistry at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. He now lives and works in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts.
